Ticket to Mars, anyone?

For years the Californian company SpaceX has a fascinating colony plan. Elon Musk, the chief executive officer of the company presented last year a plan to build a million-person city on the neighbor planet Mars. The reusable ITS spaceship is still under development, but when it’s finished it could carry at least 100 people. It would take 50 to 100 years to emigrate 1 million people.

For years we have the technology to bring people to Mars. There is one problem: money. A single ticket for a trip to the red planet would cost an estimated $10,000,000,000 using conventional spaceflight system. Musk believes that he could bring the price down to $200,000 or less per person. When people sell their house of Earth, they would have the money to emigrate to Mars.

Musk presented his plans at the 67th International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico. You can download a summary (PDF) here.
